Design Principles
Below are the design principles which were developed through research of Process Industry requirements and existing MRP, CRP and DRP systems.

The design principles have been applied pervasively during the design and development of Epicycles software through the use of detailed design patterns.

Business
  • Lean. Quiet. Seamless.
  • Minimum number of Concepts Short Implementation
  • Model Supply Chain across all boundaries (organisation, technical, process, financial, geographic, time etc.)
  • Maximise availability and utilisation of bottlenecks
  • Planning and Scheduling are collaborative processes reliant on communication and negotiation
  • Seamless boundary with Just In Time Materials Management
  • Decision support not decision making
  • The Production Process is an important Business Process within the Business
Planning and Scheduling
  • Support multiple Planners
  • Display in any Time Bucket (seconds to decades) in any Time Zone without loss of information
  • Aggregate / Summarise in any units
  • Continuous Rolling Horizon
  • Flexible Planning States (not restricted to Forecast, Plan, Schedule)
  • Mixture of Rate Based and Due Date
  • Progressively add Planning detail
  • "Real time" Planning - broadcast results immediately
  • Compare "Old" Plans for any point in time
  • Support any Process Shape
  • What-If
Human Interface
  • "Visual Planning" with maximum active use of Graphics (Flow Charts, Histograms, Gantt Charts etc.)
  • Non-modal - any number of windows open, all windows refreshed for consistency of data
  • Single Click Navigation
  • Microsoft Office standards
Technical
  • Delay differentiation to Display Time rather than Design or Implementation Time
  • Historisation supports "Undo/Redo", Audit trail of changes, Comparison of Plans at any point in time
  • Hierarchy nodes with multiple parents
  • Active Hierarchies can add (aggregate, disaggregate, summarise) sensibly
  • Client Server operates across all network topologies
  • Models across multiple geographically separate servers
  • Thick Client for user flexibility
  • All clients automatically refreshed with other client updates if required
  • Provide and Support Web Services
  • Minimum number of Concepts with maximum re-use of functions
