Its 480km from Mt Doreen to Elsey Hills. Through the Tanami Desert. |
Past the Granites. | |
Past a slow moving wide load - a front end loader on a trailer driven at walking pace over the corrugations.
Past two cyclists. | |
In to Elsey Hills for a night.
We chose poorly. Elsey Hills is about 25km past the turnoff to Balgo. But there is a smaller track just after the hills. Alas. It disappeared shortly after this. We took the long way round. |
Through Balgo. Past the church we found the community store. Fuel - 175 litres at $2.95/litre. A bit over $500. Plus some fresh food. We filled water tanks at the Art Gallery after asking around. |
Past the Condren Pinnacles near Mulan.
Through Mulan. | |
Signpost to the camp. | |
The last few hundred meters. Paruku is the Aboriginal name for Lake Gregory. We have no idea who Gregory was. |
The campsite. Site of where ownership of the land was handed back to the Aboriginals. |

From good old Wikipedia re Lake Gregory: "The lake appeared as Gregory's Salt Sea on Alfred Canning's map of the area when he was surveying the Canning Stock Route. It was named to honour the explorer Augustus Gregory who traversed the area in 1856.
