Breaden Pool to Lookout East of Well 47, Kartalapuru | ![]() |

Breaden's Pool is in a valley, east of the main track. A
few km detour. This is the main track as we started the day. The valley around the corner of the headland. There's a trig point on top of the headland. Not today. |
A wide valley, with the now distinctive cliffs.
The track a little overgrown near the pool.
We first tried the wrong creek. To get our bearings we climbed to the plateau.
There's even a sign when the correct creek is found.
The sign includes a distance to Godfrey Tank. A hint that there was a direct walking track which we ignored.
From the vehicle track end the walking track is more than a
bit overgrown. We persevered. |
The pool full of clear water.
Above the pool an Aboriginal hide. Presumably to surprise
animals and birds that arrived to drink the water. I guess there may have been less vegetation in the way. |
A relaxing time at the pool.
The hide as we left the pool on the opposite side of the valley.
We drove to the end of a track that looked like it provided
access to Godfrey's Tank. This is after about 400m, the tank is another 600m around the corner. Rough going. |
So I stopped to take a pic of a flower that was in my path.
A mix of rocky ground, spinifex, grass, dry creek crossing. Heavy going indeed. |
Still just around the corner. We decided to retreat. If I'd done my homework correctly I would have known the way was from Breaden Pool over the top of the hills. With cairns to show the way. No wonder we struggled. |
After taking a pic of some diamond doves.
We retreated back through the valley.
A quick detour to Well 48, Kaningarra. Abandoned. |
Hills, and last night's camp, to our east.
We then continued south. Grass giving way to spinifex again. |
Another Breaden Hill. A lookout east of well 47, Kartalapuru. There's an easy drive around the back. |
Within a few minutes of ariving at the top we were visited
by two parties. Two vehicles then four vehicles. They couldn't stop. |
The trucks are perched on the highest spot of the hill. Which makes it difficult to picture. |
The track to our east and north, from whence we have come.
The vast plain to our south. The view through our rear window. We look for camels, but we see none. Though there are lots of camels (and other animals) in Australia the desert we are in is big. |
And the world changes colour.
End of another moderately successful day ... I promise to read the instructions before, not after, next time .....
A cold, but cosy, night perched above the desert. A few too
many leaks for the wind to find its way. The heater worked hard and eased
our entry to a new day. As I eat breakfast I watch the wind on the spinifex. Like watching approaching swirls of wind on water as the spinifex bends and reflects the light. The morning sun across the desert, looking west where we are headed, is well worthwhile. We are not sure how far we'll travel today. Perhaps 100km. |
